1. Brief introduction about the College:
The UGC-Academic Staff College, Bangalore University, Bangalore was established on 11th August 2000 under Ninth Plan period by the UGC. It was formally inaugurated by Prof. Hari Goutham, Chairman, UGC on that day. The ASC is located in the heritage building of Old Physics Block at the nationally famous Central College Campus, Bangalore University. The Academic Staff College has the distinction of maintaining and using historically significant Sir C.V. Raman Hall where the late Sir C.V. Raman taught Physics and delivered his Nobel Prize award winning lecture on Raman effect. The ASC is organizing Orientation programmes and Refresher Courses on thrust areas for in service teachers and also for newly appointed teaching faculty on a regular basis. Besides, the ASC is conducting Workshops for College Principals, short term programmes for Research Scholars, Non-Academic Staff of the universities, and Interaction Programmes for Post Doctoral Research scholars.

ASC has so far conducted 47 Orientation Programmes and 103 Refresher courses and 3 Principal Workshops and 4 other workshops in various faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. So far a total of about 5000 teacher participants and 125 Principals have attended the said courses.

Profile of Director and Academic Staff

Prof. K.N. Mahendra

Prof. K.N. Mahendra is professor of Chemistry in Central College Campus, Bangalore University and serving in the Department for the past 30 years. He obtained his Ph.D from Delhi University and carried out post doctoral research at USA from 2001-2003. He has also served as Deputy Director of ASC during 2000-2001 and the Director, Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education, Bangalore from 2007-2010, besides, being Chairman, Dept. of Chemistry during 2010-2012. Published more than 50 research papers in reputed National and International journals and guided several M.Phil and Ph.D students. He is Life Member of IANCAS, Electro Chemical Society of India and Vice Chairman, Indian Society of Analytical Scientists (Bangalore chapter). Currently is the Director of UGC-ASC Bangalore University from March 2013.

Dr.Arun S.Vaidya:

Dr.Arun S.Vaidya is Associate Professor working in UGC-ASC, Bangalore University since 2004. He has obtained M.Sc (Mineral Exploration) from Gulbarga University, M.Phil (Geology) and Ph.D (Geology) from Karnatak University with area of specialization Micropaleontology. He was awarded University Studentship and CSIR –Fellowship, RA and SRA since 1990 to 2002 and has 16 years of Pre-doctoral (8) and Post doctoral (8) research experience. He has more than 15 years of teaching experience and published 12 research papers in various National and International journals. He has attended more than 8 workshops and 25 National and International Seminars/conferences. Currently working in UGC-ASC and has coordinated in conducting 28 OP, 30 RC and 4 workshops (3 Principal and NAAC for students) so far.

Dr.N. Nagaraja

Dr. N. Nagaraja did his M.Sc. and Ph.D in Zoology specialized in Apiculture from Bangalore University, Bangalore. He was CSIR Research Associate for 4 years and had his post doctoral research at University of Bremen, Germany. He has 10 years of teaching and 15 years of research experience. Dr. Nagaraja is an author of 2 books on Apiculture and published 30 research papers in peer-reviewed national and internal journals. He has attended many national and international conferences in India and abroad. He is principal investigator of UGC project on honeybees (2013-2016) and at present he is serving as Assistant Professor at UGC Academic Staff College since 2004.
3. Aims and objectives:
Understand the significance of education in general, and higher education in particular, in the global and Indian contexts.
Understand the linkages between education and economic and socio-economic and cultural development with particular reference to Indian policy where democracy, secularism and social equity are the basic tenants of society.
Acquire and improve basic skills of teaching at the College/University levels to achieve the goals of Higher Education.
Keep abreast of the latest developments in their specific subjects.
Understand the organization and Management of College/University and to pursue the role of teachers in the total system.
Utilize opportunity for development of personality, initiative and creativity.
Promote computer literacy as well as Internet Knowledge.

5. Projects and activities:
ASC is conducting Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses and short term courses for research students, teachers and non-academic staff every year after getting the approval from UGC.

Dr. A.S.Vaidya is working as a Co-investigator of UGC research project which is ongoing since, February, 2011.

Dr. N. Nagaraja, Assistant Professor is handling a major research project sanctioned by UGC on the topic “Conservation of Asian giant honeybee, Apis dorsata for honey production in plains of Karnataka” with an outlay of Rs. 11.35 lakhs (2013-16).
6. Events, latest News:
UGC-Academic Staff College Bangalore University, Bangalore has organized 2 Orientation Programmes and 6 Refresher Courses in Commerce and Management, Kannada, Life Sciences, Education Technology, Social Sciences and Physics during AY 2012-13. About 335 Assistant Professors from Colleges and universities attended the courses.
